Yesterday marked the end of another large record store closing. The Virgin Megastore in Manhattan, as well as the store in Hollywood, put up the "closed" sign for good. So what does this mean?
Not much really. At least not for the 18-30 year old market that buys most of their music online via iTunes, eMusic, and a slew of other digital Websites. But for the older folks, who spent way too much time hanging out in record stores, it means the end of a time when people actually spoke with other humans in the flesh about the thing they loved...music. We learned about new bands, new record labels, and collected flyers for the punk show that was happening the following weekend. And guess who we ran into at the shows? You guessed it...the same individuals we just met at the record stores.
